The artist K Usha P Rai, born May
23rd 1945 in Udupi, Karnataka , India is a well known personality in the Kanada literary circles and is an accomplished
Kanada writer and novelist.
In July 2005 a near fatal car accident threatened to ruin her life
and confined her to bed for almost
6 months. That was when she took to painting seriously as a therapy to overcome the mental and physical trauma.
She immersed herself in painting during those rough times and very soon within a period of two years,
she compiled her present collection of over 40 paintings.
Her upcoming art exhibition in Bangalore,India on Dec 7th,8th and 9th, 2007
will be a celebration of her hard work and determination.
Her exhibition theme - ''Shades of Life'' captures the myriad glimpses of life all around us.
Her paintings capture nature's serenity and beauty. They capture the stunning glimpses of
Indian culture and mythology.
Her collection contains oil
paintings, water color paintings , fabric paintings and glass
paintings.
''Shades of Life'' will be her first major venture into the field of art.

- Dasara Exhibition Award in 1969 for embroidery work made with human hair

All her major accomplishments this far have been in the literary field.
Here are some highlights of her literary achievements:
- Published 7 Kannada novels, 2 collection of short stories, 4 collection of poems ( 1 in Tulu) , 1 travelogue ; 2 collection of essays, 2 life histories and edited 7 books.
- Her articles, stories and poems have been published in leading Kannada newspapers and magazines.
- President of Karnataka Women Writers' Association: 2000-2005
Literary Awards:
- B Saroja Devi Literary Award from Kannada Sahitya Parishat - 2000;
- Neelaganga Endowment trust award from Kannada Sahitya Parishat - 2004
- Amma Award from Gulbarga, 2005 for the collection of Kanada poems "Hakki Mattu Giduga"
- Karavali Ratna Award from South Canara Association 2007
